God of War: Live Action Movie Trailer (2025)
God of War is an action-adventure game series created by David Jaffe at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio. Launched in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 (PS2), it has since become a cornerstone of the PlayStation brand, featuring ten games across multiple platforms, with an eleventh currently in development.
Set in ancient history, the story follows Kratos, a Spartan warrior who becomes the God of War. Tricked by his former master, the original Greek God of War, Ares, into killing his own family, Kratos embarks on a journey of vengeance. This sparks a series of conflicts with various pantheons of gods. The Greek era of the series centers on Kratos’s revenge against the Olympian Gods, while the Norse era, which introduces his son Atreus as a secondary protagonist, focuses on Kratos’s path to redemption, bringing him into confrontation with the Norse Gods.
The main games were developed by Santa Monica Studio, while Ready at Dawn and Javaground/Sony Online Entertainment-Los Angeles (SOE-LA) developed three side titles. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) published all games except the mobile phone installment, which was published by Sony Pictures Digital. The first seven titles form the Greek era, including God of War (2005), God of War II (2007), and God of War III (2010), with the first two released on the PS2 and the third on the PlayStation 3 (PS3). A prequel, Ascension (2013), was also released on PS3. Other games from the Greek era include Chains of Olympus (2008) and Ghost of Sparta (2010) for the PlayStation Portable (PSP), and Betrayal (2007) for Java-based mobile phones.
The Norse era began with the 2018 installment, also titled God of War, released for PlayStation 4 (PS4) and later for Microsoft Windows in 2022. It was accompanied by a short text-based prequel called A Call from the Wilds (2018) on Facebook Messenger. The sequel, Ragnarök, released in November 2022 for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, concludes the Norse saga.
The God of War series has received critical acclaim, with several titles being named among the best action games of all time. Both the 2005 and 2018 installments won numerous Game of the Year awards. Many games have also been remastered for newer PlayStation consoles. By November 2020, the franchise had sold over 51 million copies worldwide. The success of the series has led to expansions into other media, including three comic book series and three novels. Although a film adaptation of the original game was in development, it was eventually canceled. Additionally, God of War merchandise includes artwork, apparel, toys, prop replicas, and soundtracks, including the heavy metal album Blood & Metal (2010), featuring original music inspired by the series.
