Under Siege (1992)

Under Siege (1992) is an action-thriller film directed by Andrew Davis, starring Steven Seagal in one of his most iconic roles. The movie is a high-stakes, action-packed adventure set aboard a U.S. Navy battleship, blending elements of martial arts, military action, and suspense.
The story follows Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal), a former Navy SEAL who is now working as a cook aboard the USS Missouri, a battleship on its final voyage before decommissioning. The ship’s crew is preparing for a celebration in honor of the captain’s birthday, and a rock band, led by the charismatic and sinister William Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones), is invited on board for the festivities.

Unbeknownst to the crew, Strannix and his team are actually terrorists with a plan to hijack the ship and steal its nuclear weapons. Strannix is a former CIA operative gone rogue, and he’s working with Commander Krill (Gary Busey), a corrupt officer on the ship. Together, they take control of the USS Missouri and hold the crew hostage.
Ryback, however, is not just any cook. His Navy SEAL training kicks in, and he becomes the ship’s only hope. Using his skills in hand-to-hand combat, weapons, and strategy, Ryback wages a one-man war against the terrorists, systematically taking them down and thwarting their plans.

Under Siege is known for its intense action sequences, including hand-to-hand combat, gunfights, and explosions. Steven Seagal’s portrayal of the calm, skilled, and deadly Ryback helped solidify his status as a major action star of the 1990s. The film also features strong performances from Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey as the main villains, adding depth and personality to the antagonists.

The film was a commercial and critical success, praised for its well-executed action scenes and suspenseful pacing. Often compared to Die Hard for its “hero versus terrorists in a confined space” premise, Under Siege remains a classic in the action-thriller genre. It also spawned a sequel, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995), set on a hijacked train.
