Review: “The Gorge” (2025) – A Daring Blend of Genres That Almost Works

The Gorge, directed by Scott Derrickson, is an ambitious attempt to merge romance, sci-fi, action, and horror into a single narrative. The film stars Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy as elite snipers Levi and Drasa, stationed on opposite sides of a mysterious gorge. Their mission: to guard the abyss from an undisclosed threat. As they communicate through signs and sharpshooting competitions, a bond forms between them, leading to a romantic connection that defies the isolation of their posts.

The film’s first half is its strongest, focusing on the developing relationship between Levi and Drasa. Teller and Taylor-Joy deliver compelling performances, capturing the longing and tension of two individuals separated by circumstance yet drawn together by fate. The cinematography by Dan Laustsen and the haunting score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross enhance the atmosphere, immersing the audience in the film’s unique setting.

However, as the narrative progresses, The Gorge shifts gears into more conventional action and horror territory. The revelation of the gorge’s true nature and the ensuing chaos feel rushed and somewhat disjointed. The film’s attempt to juggle multiple genres leads to tonal inconsistencies, making it challenging to fully invest in the unfolding events.

Despite these shortcomings, The Gorge offers a fresh take on the forbidden romance trope, set against a backdrop of supernatural intrigue. While it may not fully realize its potential, the film’s ambition and the chemistry between its leads make it a noteworthy entry in the genre-blending category.
