Proximity (2024) is a sleek and thought-provoking sci-fi thriller that delves into the eerie consequences of human contact with an ancient extraterrestrial intelligence. Directed by newcomer Elise Tran, the film combines atmospheric storytelling with jaw-dropping visual effects, proving that independent sci-fi is still alive and kicking.

The story follows aerospace engineer Michael Chen (played by Kelvin Yu), who begins experiencing time lapses and vivid visions after a mysterious satellite malfunction. As he digs deeper, he uncovers a conspiracy that links his symptoms to a long-abandoned space probe — and a message from beyond our solar system.

What makes Proximity stand out isn’t just its tight pacing or smart cinematography, but the way it explores human emotion in the face of cosmic insignificance. The film asks big questions about identity, reality, and the lengths we’re willing to go for truth. Yu gives a compelling performance, bringing emotional depth to a character caught between logic and madness.

The score by Hildur Guðnadóttir adds to the film’s unnerving mood, with haunting strings that elevate every suspenseful moment. Some of the dialogue can feel a bit on-the-nose, and the third act rushes its revelations slightly, but overall, Proximity is a gripping, ambitious ride.
