Movie Review: Paradox (2017)
⭐⭐⭐½ (3.5/5)
Paradox delivers a gritty, emotional rollercoaster packed with intense action and raw performances. Directed by Wilson Yip, best known for the Ip Man series, this Hong Kong action-thriller leans heavily into both heartache and hand-to-hand combat.
Louis Koo shines in the role of Lee Chung-chi, a tough Hong Kong negotiator who travels to Thailand in search of his missing daughter. What begins as a desperate search soon spirals into a violent uncovering of a criminal conspiracy. Koo’s performance is one of the film’s highlights — emotionally charged and grounded, adding a human layer to the film’s brutal fights.
Speaking of which, the action choreography is bone-crunching and beautifully executed. Tony Jaa brings his signature Muay Thai precision to the table, and Wu Yue adds a stylish brutality to the mix. Fight scenes are fast, fierce, and well shot — fans of martial arts films won’t be disappointed.
That said, the plot does fall into some familiar territory. The storyline is predictable at times, and the pacing dips slightly in the second act. But the emotional weight, especially between father and daughter, elevates it above the average action flick.
Paradox is not just a movie about fists flying — it’s about the lengths a father will go for his child. If you’re looking for a dark, emotionally-driven action film with strong performances and hard-hitting combat, this one’s worth your time.
