Mortal Engines (2018)

Mortal Engines (2018) is a post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Christian Rivers, based on the novel by Philip Reeve. The movie is set in a dystopian future where cities are mobile, mounted on massive engines that allow them to roam the desolate Earth. These “Traction Cities” survive by consuming smaller towns in a process known as “Municipal Darwinism.”
The story follows Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar), a fierce and determined young woman with a scarred past. She seeks vengeance against Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving), a powerful and ruthless figure in the moving city of London, who is responsible for her mother’s death. Hester’s quest intersects with Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), a historian and apprentice from London, who becomes an unwitting ally in her fight.
As Hester and Tom uncover Valentine’s plans to harness a devastating ancient weapon, they join forces with outlaw aviator Anna Fang (Jihae) and a rebel group known as the Anti-Traction League. Together, they aim to prevent Valentine from unleashing chaos on the world.

The film is noted for its visually stunning effects, depicting the grandeur and mechanics of Traction Cities. While Mortal Engines explores themes of revenge, survival, and resistance, it also delves into the moral consequences of unchecked technological advancement and imperialism.
