The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – Official Main Trailer
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014), directed by Peter Jackson, is the third and final film in The Hobbit trilogy. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved novel, the movie wraps up the story of Bilbo Baggins, the dwarves of Erebor, and their quest to reclaim their homeland from the fearsome dragon Smaug.
As the title suggests, this chapter culminates in a grand and action-packed battle, involving multiple armies vying for control of the Lonely Mountain’s treasures.
Plot Summary
The film picks up immediately where the previous installment, The Desolation of Smaug, left off. The dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) has left his lair within the Lonely Mountain and is now attacking Lake-town. His fiery assault results in chaos, death, and destruction, but the heroic Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) ultimately manages to slay the dragon with a well-aimed black arrow. Smaug’s death leaves the vast treasure of Erebor unguarded, drawing the attention of several factions.
Inside the Lonely Mountain, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) has reclaimed his ancestral home, but the lure of the mountain’s immense wealth begins to corrupt him. Thorin succumbs to “dragon sickness,” a greed-driven madness that causes him to become increasingly paranoid and obsessed with the treasure, particularly the legendary Arkenstone. Despite his loyalty to his company of dwarves, Thorin’s growing mistrust of Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and others complicates the situation.
As Thorin’s mind deteriorates, multiple armies converge on the Lonely Mountain. The Elves of Mirkwood, led by Thranduil (Lee Pace), seek a portion of the treasure that was promised to them, while the Men of Lake-town, led by Bard, hope for compensation to rebuild their ruined homes. Meanwhile, Azog the Defiler (Manu Bennett) and his massive orc army march toward Erebor with the intent to annihilate everyone and seize the mountain for their dark master, Sauron.
