Redbad is a 2018 historical action film directed by Roel Reinรฉ. Set in the early Middle Ages, the film tells the story of Redbad, a legendary Frisian king who fought against the expansion of the Frankish Empire and the forced Christianization of his people. The film delves into themes of freedom, religion, and cultural identity, exploring the tension between paganism and Christianity in early medieval Europe.
The film is set during a time when the powerful Frankish king, Pepin of Herstal, seeks to expand his empire by conquering neighboring tribes and converting them to Christianity. The Frisians, a pagan people living in what is now the Netherlands, are one of the last holdouts against this growing influence.
Redbad, played by Gijs Naber, is the son of the Frisian king Aldgisl and heir to the throne. However, after a failed battle and political betrayal, Redbad is cast out by his own people and left to die.
Surviving his exile, Redbad embarks on a journey of self-discovery, during which he learns the importance of his heritage, his people, and the resistance against foreign invaders.
He allies with the Danes and eventually returns to his homeland, determined to unite the Frisians and other northern tribes to resist the Franks and protect their pagan traditions. Redbad’s personal struggle with faith, loyalty, and leadership forms the heart of the film, as he grapples with the loss of his father and the growing influence of Christianity on his people.
