The story begins with the chaotic preparations for the trip, during which Kevin feels neglected and unappreciated by his family. After a quarrel, he wishes that his family would disappear. The next morning, due to a power outage resetting the clocks, the family oversleeps, leading to a frantic dash to the airport. In the confusion, Kevin is mistakenly left behind.

At first, Kevin revels in his newfound freedom, enjoying all the things an 8-year-old dreams of—eating junk food, watching scary movies, and doing as he pleases. However, his fun is cut short when Harry (played by Joe Pesci) and Marv (played by Daniel Stern), two bumbling burglars known as the “Wet Bandits,” set their sights on the McCallister home. Unbeknownst to them, Kevin is still there—and he’s not about to let them ruin his Christmas.

Kevin, demonstrating remarkable ingenuity, sets up a series of elaborate traps throughout the house, turning it into a fortress of hilariously painful obstacles for Harry and Marv.
