“The Raid” is a 2011 Indonesian action thriller film written, directed, and edited by Gareth Evans. It stars Iko Uwais, who had previously collaborated with Evans on the 2009 action film “Merantau.” The story revolves around an elite squad assigned to infiltrate a high-rise building controlled by a ruthless drug lord in Jakarta’s slums, with Rama (played by Uwais), a seasoned team member, among them.
Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), “The Raid” garnered positive reviews from critics. In the United States, the film’s title was changed to “The Raid: Redemption” because distributor Sony Pictures Classics couldn’t secure the rights to the original title, which also allowed Evans to plan future entries in the series. The U.S. release features a score by Mike Shinoda and Joseph Trapanese and was released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 14, 2012. A sequel titled “The Raid 2” followed in 2014. Both films prominently feature the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat, with fight choreography led by Uwais and Yayan Ruhian. Although a third film was considered, Evans ultimately opted not to pursue the project further.
“The Raid 3” (2024) is an anticipated action thriller and the third installment in the critically acclaimed “Raid” series, directed by Gareth Evans. Following the intense and high-octane narratives of “The Raid: Redemption” (2011) and “The Raid 2” (2014), this film is expected to continue the story of elite police officer Rama, played by Iko Uwais. Known for its brutal and meticulously choreographed fight scenes, “The Raid 3” promises to deliver even more gripping action and a compelling storyline. Fans eagerly await this sequel, anticipating it to push the boundaries of martial arts cinema and bring a thrilling conclusion to the series.
