Movie Review: Extinction (2015)
⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆ (3/5)
“Bleak, atmospheric, and surprisingly emotional, Extinction (2015) offers a chilling take on the zombie genre that focuses more on isolation and human conflict than just undead carnage.
Directed by Miguel Ángel Vivas, this post-apocalyptic thriller stands out by narrowing its scope to a deeply personal survival story between two men and a young girl in a snow-covered ghost town. Years after a virus outbreak wiped out most of humanity, Patrick (Matthew Fox) and Jack (Jeffrey Donovan) live in adjacent houses but haven’t spoken in almost a decade. Their mutual hatred simmers under the surface — until the creatures return.
While the pacing drags at times, the film makes up for it with strong performances and a haunting visual style. Matthew Fox delivers a nuanced performance, portraying a broken man haunted by past trauma, and Quinn McColgan as the young girl brings warmth to the otherwise frozen landscape.
Don’t go in expecting non-stop zombie action — Extinction is more about the frostbite of loneliness than the bite of the undead. It’s a slow burn, but it leaves an emotional imprint.
Not a game-changer, but a solid entry for fans of character-driven horror.”
