Dark Winds (2022)

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5)
Dark Winds, created by Graham Roland and based on the Leaphorn & Chee novels by Tony Hillerman, is a gripping psychological thriller that offers a rare and authentic glimpse into Native American life, spirituality, and justice. Set in the hauntingly beautiful but isolated Four Corners region during the 1970s, the series blends mystery, cultural depth, and character-driven storytelling in a way that feels fresh and deeply resonant.
Zahn McClarnon delivers a standout performance as Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn — a man of integrity, wisdom, and quiet intensity. Alongside him, Kiowa Gordon portrays Officer Jim Chee, a younger, more conflicted investigator with his own personal ties to the case and the community. As the two delve into a series of unsettling crimes, they are forced to confront not just external threats, but their own beliefs, trauma, and spiritual questions.
The show succeeds in balancing classic crime-thriller elements with a rich exploration of Navajo culture and identity. From its atmospheric cinematography and period-accurate setting to its complex, layered characters, Dark Winds is both entertaining and meaningful. It’s rare to see Indigenous stories told with such respect and authenticity in mainstream media.
