Movie Review: Constantine 2 (2025)

He’s back โ€” and Hell is officially on notice.

Two decades after the cult classic Constantine (2005) first hit theaters, Keanu Reeves returns as the trench coat-wearing, chain-smoking exorcist in Constantine 2 (2025) โ€” and itโ€™s everything fans couldโ€™ve hoped for, and more.

Directed by Francis Lawrence once again, this long-awaited sequel doesnโ€™t just revisit the dark, gritty world of angels, demons, and damned souls โ€” it cranks the mythology to eleven. The film picks up years after the first, with John Constantine living in the shadows, haunted (literally) by choices he canโ€™t outrun. But when the balance between Heaven and Hell begins to unravel, heโ€™s dragged back into the eternal war โ€” and this time, the stakes are personal.

Keanu Reeves slips back into the role like he never left. Older, rougher, and even more jaded, his Constantine is a man whoโ€™s seen too much โ€” and isnโ€™t done fighting. The chemistry between Reeves and the returning Tilda Swinton (as the androgynous, menacing Gabriel) crackles with tension, while the addition of a mysterious new antagonist โ€” played masterfully by Oscar Isaac โ€” adds a fresh, dangerous layer to the story.

Visually, the film is a feast. The Hell sequences are more nightmarish than ever, the exorcisms are downright brutal, and the spiritual symbolism feels both ancient and modern. The score by Marco Beltrami pulses like a heartbeat on the edge of death โ€” eerie, epic, unforgettable.

What really stands out is the tone: darker, deeper, and more emotional than the first. Constantine isnโ€™t just a reluctant hero anymore โ€” heโ€™s a man on the edge of redemption, battling enemies outside and within. Itโ€™s still packed with action and occult madness, but it hits harder, digs deeper, and leaves a mark.

Is it perfect? Not quite โ€” the pacing dips slightly in the second act, and newcomers might be confused by some of the lore-heavy moments. But for longtime fans, Constantine 2 is nothing short of divine chaos.

Verdict: Constantine 2 is a hellish, holy triumph โ€” and proof that Keanu Reeves is still the king of cool in the underworld.
