Significant Other (2022)

Title: Love, Lies, and Aliens – Significant Other (2022) Review
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
Significant Other starts out like a typical couples’ getaway-gone-wrong movie—until it swerves into “what the hell is happening?” territory, and never looks back. Equal parts romance, sci-fi, and psychological thriller, this 2022 mind-bender will leave you second-guessing every loving gaze and suspicious silence.
Maika Monroe (a scream queen in her own right after It Follows) delivers another solid performance as Ruth, a woman hiking through the Pacific Northwest with her awkwardly sweet boyfriend Harry (played by Jake Lacy). But as their trip unfolds, so does Harry—and I don’t mean emotionally.
The first act builds an almost cozy tension: the quiet forest, strange symbols, a couple with communication issues. But once the twist drops (no spoilers, but let’s just say you won’t look at your partner the same way again), the film goes from moody to absolutely unhinged in the best way.
The cinematography is hauntingly beautiful, all misty woods and alien eeriness. The script stumbles here and there with some clunky dialogue and a few pacing issues, especially in the second half, but the originality of the concept makes it worth sticking through.
Is Significant Other perfect? No. Is it weird, bold, and refreshingly different? Absolutely. It’s the kind of movie you finish and immediately want to talk about, even if you’re not 100% sure what you just watched. And hey—at least it’ll make your next couple’s hike feel way more intense.
