The movie explores the conflicts between his idealistic beliefs and personal relationships, particularly his tumultuous marriage with Sophia Tolstaya. As Tolstoy (played by Christopher Plummer) nears the end of his life, he is torn between his dedication to pacifism, celibacy, and communal living, which he promotes through his followers, and his deep emotional connection to his wife Sophia (played by Helen Mirren). Sophia, who has been by his side for decades, fights to preserve his legacy and protect her family’s financial rights, as Tolstoy’s disciples push him to renounce personal wealth and donate his works to the public.
