Review of Unknown (2011)

Unknown is a psychological action-thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, starring Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, January Jones, and Bruno Ganz. With a gripping mystery, intense action, and a strong lead performance, the film delivers an engaging story filled with twists and suspense.

Plot & Storyline

Dr. Martin Harris (Liam Neeson), a scientist attending a conference in Berlin, gets into a car accident and falls into a coma. When he wakes up, he discovers that his identity has been erased—his wife (January Jones) no longer recognizes him, and another man (Aidan Quinn) has taken his place. With no proof of who he is, Martin must unravel the mystery behind his lost identity while evading assassins who are trying to kill him.

The film starts as a psychological thriller, playing with themes of memory, paranoia, and identity. As Martin pieces together clues with the help of a taxi driver, Gina (Diane Kruger), the movie transitions into more of an action-packed espionage thriller. The twists keep the audience guessing, though some elements may feel familiar to fans of films like The Bourne Identity.

Performances

  • Liam Neeson carries the film with his intense and emotional performance. His transformation from a confused victim to a determined fighter is compelling.
  • Diane Kruger as Gina is a strong and resourceful ally, adding heart to the story.
  • January Jones plays an intriguing but somewhat cold role as Martin’s wife.
  • Bruno Ganz delivers a standout performance as an ex-Stasi officer who helps Martin uncover the truth.

Action & Direction

Director Jaume Collet-Serra creates a tense and stylish atmosphere, making great use of Berlin’s cold and isolating environment. The car chases and fight scenes are well-executed, though not as intense as Neeson’s later action films like Taken. The pacing is mostly solid, though the middle section slows down before the big reveal.

Twist & Ending (Spoiler-Free)

The movie’s plot twist is unexpected and changes the way we see the entire story. While it might not be the most original twist in the genre, it’s executed well enough to keep viewers engaged.

Final Verdict

Unknown is an entertaining and suspenseful thriller, driven by a strong performance from Liam Neeson. While it borrows elements from other identity-based thrillers, it still manages to keep the audience invested with its mystery, action, and unexpected twists.

7.5/10 – A gripping mystery with solid action and an intriguing premise.
