The film follows Charles (Hugh Grant), a charming but perpetually unlucky-in-love man, as he navigates a series of significant life events surrounding, as the title suggests, four weddings and one funeral.

Throughout these occasions, Charles is accompanied by a close-knit group of friends, each with their own quirks, romantic entanglements, and personal struggles. The story begins with Charles attending the wedding of a friend, where he meets Carrie (Andie MacDowell), an American who seems perfect for him.

However, after a brief and passionate encounter, Charles discovers that Carrie is already engaged to someone else. Despite this initial setback, Charles and Carrie’s paths cross repeatedly at various weddings, and their relationship grows in unexpected and heartfelt ways.
