The 12th Man (2017)

The 12th Man (2017) is a riveting Norwegian historical drama directed by Harald Zwart that brings to life the incredible true story of Jan Baalsrud, a Norwegian resistance fighter who defied the odds to survive during World War II. Based on the harrowing events of Operation Martin, a sabotage mission against Nazi forces in 1943, the film follows Baalsrud’s escape after the operation turns disastrous. Out of 12 commandos, Baalsrud is the sole survivor after their mission is compromised, leaving him to embark on a desperate journey to evade capture.

Thomas Gullestad delivers a powerful portrayal of Baalsrud, capturing his endurance and courage as he fights to survive. Injured and relentlessly pursued by Nazi troops led by the ruthless Kurt Stage (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Baalsrud must push through the unforgiving, icy terrain of northern Norway. Along the way, he receives help from brave locals who risk their lives to aid his escape. Despite facing frostbite, near starvation, and severe physical injuries, Baalsrud’s determination to reach neutral Sweden propels him forward in this grueling test of survival.

With breathtaking cinematography that captures the brutal beauty of the Arctic, The 12th Man immerses viewers in Baalsrud’s struggle against both nature and the enemy. The film stands as a gripping testament to human resilience, the strength of the Norwegian resistance, and the solidarity of those who risked everything during wartime. It’s a compelling and inspiring story of endurance that continues to captivate audiences with its raw portrayal of courage and survival against all odds.
