The film begins with Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), being dispatched to negotiate an end to the Trade Federation’s blockade of the planet Naboo. They soon discover that the blockade is part of a larger plot orchestrated by the Sith Lord Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid) to destabilize the Galactic Republic. During their mission, they rescue Queen Padmรฉ Amidala (Natalie Portman) and escape to the planet Tatooine to repair their damaged starship. On Tatooine, Qui-Gon encounters a young slave boy named Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), who exhibits an unusually strong connection to the Force. Believing Anakin to be the prophesied Chosen One who will bring balance to the Force, Qui-Gon arranges for his freedom and brings him to the Jedi Council on Coruscant. Despite Qui-Gon’s belief in Anakin’s potential, the Council, led by Yoda (Frank Oz) and Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson), is reluctant to train him due to his age and the fear and anger they sense in him.
